2025 Theme: Community Engagement and the Grassroots of Change

The Power of YES

The heart of YES is a spirit of mentorship and students. Our students remain our most valuable asset and resource – they guide our project curriculum, direct our focus, and lead our youth activities. By leveraging their unique skills and abilities and centering their voices, YES has created a formula for success that influences community growth, economic prosperity, and student-driven leadership. YES' model has been vetted and has thrived for nearly three decades. Our student successes and outcomes are a testament to the important work we do to change the lives of young people and families in the region.

In this episode we dig deeper into the importance and significance of involving youth in community engagement and grassroots movement. Youth participation in community engagement projects is a powerful way to develop leadership, build intergenerational solidarity, and nurture civic responsibility. We take a deeper dive into Youth Enrichment Service (YES) in this conversation with Denies Jones, Educational Consultant and member of the YES family. As the YES Program Director, Denise and her colleagues developed YES’ motivational model which she continues to examine and build as part of her PhD studies at the University of Michigan. Alongside her current studies, Denise serves as the YES Deputy Director where she continues to support the organization’s programmatic, operational, and strategic efforts and shepherds its mission and legacy.

Segment 1 - Meet Denise Jones, Educational Consultant at Youth Enrichment Services

Guest Introduction

Denise Jones is the daughter of two incredibly selfless, dedicated, and passion-driven educators who made personal sacrifices for Denise and her two sisters (and now niece) to attend South Fayette High School. Her upward academic trajectory allowed her to access honors and AP courses where she developed an authentic love for learning and began seeing herself as a Black woman capable of pursuing post-secondary education. She attended Allegheny College, where she majored in Economics and Minored in Black Studies. Upon completing her undergraduate studies, Denise won four prestigious academic honors and graduated Magma Cum Laude.

THE POWER OF YES

Later Denise applied for Teach for America, where she met incredible young people with poise and promise but without the resources and opportunities to display their brilliance. This experience helped Denise understand the joys and limitations of teaching, particularly in bureaucratic systems. With such understanding, Denise transitioned into graduate school at Teachers College, Columbia, where she received her master’s degree, hoping to find the panacea for the classroom ills.

In search for more solutions, Denise agreed to work at her father’s community-based non-profit organization, Youth Enrichment Services (YES), to help young people become their own best resource. Denise is now pursuing a PhD in education and psychology from the University of Michigan, where she is building a post-secondary pipeline for youth of color. Now, in her fourth year, Denise is a doctoral candidate preparing to write her dissertation which explores how contextual and environmental factors influence Black youths’ orientations toward the future and advancement toward adulthood.

Segment 2 - How Do We Engage Young People in Community Change Efforts?

YES provides socially and economically at risk youth the opportunity to achieve success through participation in mentorship, education, and enrichment programs.
  • Empowering youth through mentorship, education, advocacy, and exposure
  • Enriching students’ educational, social, cultural, and workforce experiences
  • Serving local and surrounding Pittsburgh communities, students, and families.

Segment 3 - YES: Beyond 2025

Evolution. Motivation.
External motivation (I have to) vs internal motivation (I want to) evolves into community change and advocacy.
Following the hard work put in by all members in 2024, the theme for 2025 is simple: There is more work to be done: together we stand, together we unite, and together we all succeed on behalf of our youth and families. To advance the plans we have set for the future, we encourage you to make a contribution to YES for 2025. Join us in the effort to empower youth, support families, and make communities their own best resource. Your time, talents, resources, and expertise, all play a vital role in us changing the lives of our youth and their communities.

Segment 4 - What does Denise Jones' Personal Journey Look Like Going Forward?

Denise says plans to do a lot of learning that will help her think about how how to position YES. She say she will probably continue to pursue research and do some work in the learning sciences to figure out how to use resources to create more space and room for people to have a seat at the table. So it’s important for Denise to not just take advantage of educational spaces without saying how can we get more young people in these in those spaces. She tells students if here isn’t a seat or a table then build the seat and the table.

Words of Wisdom from Amanda Gorman

“We are the good news that we have been looking for, demonstrating that every dusk holds a dawn disguised within it. Today we don’t burst into a new world. We begin it.” — Amanda Gorman
“We lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide, because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside.” — Amanda Gorman
